A completely different picture
Not so long ago, the "Special No. 1" of the Swedish trotting trade magazine Sulkysport was published. In addition to many statistics and interesting stories (for example about Stefan Balazsi), the majority of the stallions are presented.
85 of these are presented, we have closely examined the paternal lines in order to shed light on the veritable difference between Europe and North America in this regard. The result:
27 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Star´s Pride
19 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Scotland - Speedy Crown - Speedy Somolli - Valley Victory
14 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Peter Scott - Sam Williams - Carioca II - Fakir du Vivier
14 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Victory Song - Garland Lobell
3 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Scotland - Speedy Crown
3 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Scotland - Arnie Almahurst - Pine Chip
2 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Victory Song - Sharif di Iesolo
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - McKinney - The Great McKinney – Ogaden - Quadrophenio
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Chimes – Hal Dale - Cam Fella (Pacing Line, mostly...)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Fuschia – Quinio – Kerjacques
Above all, there is a clear difference. The traditional father line of the great Star's Pride is comparatively sparse in North America, while it continues to celebrate great successes in Europe. In the States and Canada, on the other hand, the father lines of Valley Victory and Garland Lobell have been at the top for many years.
A step into the past: At the end of the 19th century there was a quartet of influential stallions, alphabetically:
– Axworthy (* 1892)
– Bingen (* 1893)
– McKinney (* 1887)
– Peter the Great (* 1895)
While Axworthy's father line was certainly the most successful in the first half of the 20th century (Greyhound is a prime example), it is practically extinct today.
Bingen did not cover for very long, it was also to blame for campaigns of calumny. His influence is practically forgotten today.
McKinney's line in North America is also virtually non-existent, but one line made it popular again in Europe, at the top the outstanding stallion Orlando Vici from France.
The full force of this four-leaf clover seems to be with Peter the Great today. He is grandfather on the one hand from Scotland (* 1925), the fountain of the line from Speedy Crown and today Valley Victory, on the other hand also grandfather of Volomite (* 1926), starting point of the lines of Star's Pride and Victory Song.
Now, on the right hand side, there is a comparison between North America and France as well as Sweden, the two main trotting nations in Europe. If you look at the first 10 of each statistic, the following ultimately results for the three countries mentioned:
North America:
5 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Scotland - Speedy Crown - Speedy Somolli - Valley Victory
(Muscle Hill, Cantab Hall, Muscle Mass, Explosive Matter, Father Patrick)
3 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Victory Song - Garland Lobell
(Chapter Seven, Swan For All, Donato Hanover)
2 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Star´s Pride
(Kadabra, Credit Winner)
France:
4 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Star´s Pride
(Ready Cash, Jag de Bellouet, Timoko, Niky)
3 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Peter Scott - Sam Williams - Carioca II - Fakir du Vivier
(Love You, Coktail Jet, Royal Dream)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Scotland - Speedy Crown
(Ganyméde)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - McKinney - The Great McKinney – Ogaden - Quadrophenio
(Orlando Vici)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Victory Song - Sharif di Iesolo
(Prodigious)
Sweden:
5 Sires:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Star´s Pride
(Maharajah, S J´s Caviar, Ready Cash, From Above, Super Photo Kosmos)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Scotland - Speedy Crown - Speedy Somolli - Valley Victory
(Muscle Hill)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Peter Scott - Sam Williams - Carioca II - Fakir du Vivier
(Love You)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - McKinney - The Great McKinney – Ogaden - Quadrophenio
(Orlando Vici)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Volomite - Victory Song - Sharif di Iesolo
(Zola Boko)
1 Sire:
Paternal line: Hambletonian - Scotland - Arnie Almahurst - Pine Chip
(Scarlet Knight)
To sum up, Muscle Hill is champion stallion in North America and Sweden, while Valley Victory's blood is completely lacking in France. This is, of course, due to the French Stud Book, which has not been open to new blood for many, many years (well, France currently has Ready Cash and its sons and there is probably no need to open the Stud Book). In our opinion a pity, see also our article The Winter Meeting in France 2018/2019.
We also added statistics from the French three year olds to show the incredible dominance of Ready Cash, also a representative of the Star's Pride line. Not only that he himself is the clear number 1, sons of him follow in the other three ranks. That is really outstanding and will continue for a longer period!
